Which Type of Fence is Right for Me?

So you are in the market for a fence and you aren’t sure what type and style you should buy. This page can help you narrow down your options and find the fence that will fulfill your unique needs.

If you are looking for the most privacy, your two options are either wood or vinyl. A vinyl fence generally requires more money up front than a wood fence, but maintenance costs will even out the total cost of the fences after about 10 years, depending on the size of the fence. So you should base that decision on how long you will be staying in a location or if you want to spend the money on maintaining a wood fence in order to get the natural look that only wood can offer. If you are looking to make an inexpensive barrier for privacy, a spruce wood fence may be able to fulfill your need. Staining or not staining the fence is up to you. The extra maintenance may extend the life of the fence quite a bit, but there are also inexpensive wood coatings and stains available.

If you are looking to enclose the yard or a section of the yard, but privacy is not a concern, aluminum, wood, vinyl, or chain link is able to fulfill this need. Spaced picket wood and vinyl fences are available in many different styles, while aluminum and chain link will be less of an obstruction to the view of whatever is behind the fence.

If you are looking to make a simple barrier, but keeping children or pets in the yard is not a concern, split rail or welded wire may be a good choice. Attaching wire mesh along the side of a split rail fence can be a good way to enhance its effect as a barrier.

If you want to add a nice touch to your yard, garden, or pool area, an aluminum fence is a popular choice that has elements of security, but also offers an elegant finish.

If security is your main concern, chain link is a popular choice. Privacy with an added touch of security can be accomplished by attaching wood panels to steel posts or adding privacy slats to a chain link fence.
